Road safety, the first priority

In view of the gravity of the problem represented by road accidents, the IRU shares the conviction of the World Bank, the Authorities of the European Union and Governments and that it is urgent to obtain mobilisation in favour of road safety. In Europe, the constant reduction in the number of victims proves that action bears fruit.

Because they use an infrastructure shared with others, passenger and goods road transport operators are aware of their responsibilities. They have long campaigned for greater safety and partnership on the road, under the auspices of their national Associations, members of the IRU, and, more recently, by virtue of their commitment to the IRU Charter for Sustainable Development through improvements both in terms of drivers, vehicles and of road infrastructure.

Current priorities:

Participation in an Expert Group on Cargo Securing and Abnormal Transport, convened by the European Commission, to draft European Best Practice Guidelines on Cargo Securing
Participation in the Scania Young Truck Driver Competition.
European Commission - IRU Study on accidents involving trucks (ETAC).
