Sustainable Development
Road Transport carries more than 70% by volume and more than 90% by value. Road transport is not the problem; it is the solution. The challenge is to make it compatible with Sustainable Development the policy goal adopted by the United Nations as part of Agenda 21 at the First Earth Summit in Rio in 1992. To date, the road transport industry is the only transport mode that has committed itself to the goal of Sustainable Development. It has, in fact, taken the lead in the transport sector. The IRU has made working towards Sustainable Development a constitutional obligation. The IRU, as the global representative of the road transport sector, works hand in hand with its national member associations in both actions designed to help achieve Sustainable Development. By using top-down and bottom-up approaches, the sector simultaneously signals the importance of sustainable development to its future while helping operators to learn from each others experiences at all levels. The IRU has identified the 3 "i" approach as the most robust and cost-effective basis for Sustainable Development.
