The advantages offered by combined transport in terms of CO2 emissions are markedly less than commonly assumed in political circles. The lower CO2 emissions provided by combined transport are achieved only with a high proportion of nuclear power used in the generation of electricity for railways.

The railways are not inheritantly more environmently friendly when diesel powered locomotives are used or when the energy for the required electricity is produced from coal or peat.
