May 15, 2008 IRU appoints two new Honorary MembersIstanbul – The International Road Transport Union (IRU) today paid tribute to Mr. Milan Svetek (Intertransport, Slovenia) and Mr. David Green (FTA, UK), by appointing them Honorary Members of the IRU at its General Assembly held in the framework of the 31st IRU World Congress. Milan Svetek, Secretary General of Intertransport, Slovenia, since joining the IRU in the 1970s, has actively participated in the work of the IRU within Sections II and III and within various Commissions and Working Groups, in particular the Group of Experts on Dangerous Goods (GEMD) and the Group of Experts on Combined Transport (GETC). Mr Svetek, who has recently celebrated his 85th birthday, is well respected in the industry and has always defended the profession at the national and international level. David Green, as former Director General of the Freight Transport Association (FTA) in the UK has strongly supported, enhanced and promoted the interest of UK industry as users and operators of transport, vehicles, infrastructure and facilities. Green’s career within the IRU has spanned several decades. First elected to the IRU Presidential Executive in 1989, then Vice-President of the IRU from 1993 to 1995, he was subsequently elected President of the IRU, a position which he held until 2001, after which he continued to serve on the Presidential Executive until the end of 2007. IRU President, Janusz Lacny, said, “These two outstanding figures from the road transport industry have dedicated their professional careers to the profession both at national and international levels, and strongly contributed to the IRU’s work in defending the industry’s interests.”
