IRU Academy Seminar participation shows security is a worldwide concern

Hanover - The IRU Academy Seminar "The Road to achieve Enhanced Security" has attracted more than 100 participants from 36 countries across the Americas, Asia and Europe, underlining that security and security-related training are worldwide concerns. The Seminar was staged in partnership with the German Automobile Industry Association VDA during the IAA international commercial vehicle show.

IRU President Paul Laeremans emphasised that security can only be achieved through partnership. "In an increasingly global economy, where more and more links are being added to intermodal transport chains, the vulnerability increases, so authorities and commercial partners must work together to strengthen security!"
Martin Rojas, Executive Director for Safety, Security and Operations, American Trucking Association briefed the seminar on the US Anti-Terrorism Action Plan (ATAP), developed in cooperation with industry. He concluded: "Trucking is essential to our economic wellbeing, so we must balance economic security and national security."

Olivier Kervella, Chief, Dangerous Goods and Special Cargo Section, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, looked at changes in the ADR Agreement governing the transport of dangerous goods by road. Increased responsibility will be placed on training providers to ensure that their instructors are informed about the changes and that their training materials are updated.

IRU Academy Head, Bruno Dingemans, said: "The IRU Academy's new ADR training programme, with its fully developed lesson plan package, adapted to reflect operational practices, will give training institutes and schools a head start in ensuring that their Dangerous Goods training covers the latest amendments to the 2005 ADR Agreement."

With a new European Union Directive on professional driver training due to come into effect in 2006, the IRU Academy announced in Hanover that it will stage a Seminar addressing this topic in Istanbul in September 2005, hosted by IRU Turkish Member Association UND.
