ADR
Stands for European Agreement concerning the international carriage of dangerous goods by road. The UNECE is also responsible through the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC), for the harmonisation of all provisions governing the transport of dangerous goods at the world level and for all modes of transport.
Approval plate
Affixed by the beneficiary of the approval certificate issued by the competent national authority responsible for granting approval to certify that an unlimited series of containers meet the requirements set out in the TIR Convention, 1975 to be used for the transport of goods under Customs seal.
ATA carnets
Are Customs documents for the temporary importation of certain goods (commercial samples and advertising films, goods for international exhibitions, certain types of professional equipment) where there is a clear intention that they will be re-exported in the same condition in which they were imported. The ATA carnets replace normal import and export procedures for qualifying goods subject to a sufficient guarantee or cash deposit being lodged with the issuer of the carnet to cover any possible Customs claims in the event of misuse of the document. The scheme is administered by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) based in Paris which authorize national Chambers of Commerce to issue the documents on its behalf.
Carnet de passage en douane (CPD)
Is a well established Customs document that replaces national transit or temporary importation procedures for lorries that make the operation of a separate national control system superfluous as it provides for an internationally recognized temporary importation paper and guarantee which covers all taxes and duties due by foreign operators to be utilized for national Customs purposes.
Certificate of approval of a road vehicle
Issued by the competent national approval or inspection authorities to certify that an individual load compartment of the road vehicle meets the requirements set out in the TIR Convention, 1975.
CMR consignment note
Is a legal contractual document between consignor, road transport operator and consignee, which standardises the conditions governing the contract for international road transport, particularly with respect to documents to be used and the carrier’s liability with the aim of facilitating international road transport and international trade. To use the CMR note, at least one of the countries involved in the international transport (of origin or of destination) should be a Contracting Party to the CMR Convention.
Combined transport
Shall mean a transport of goods where at least for a leg of the operation different means of transport is used than the one initially applied, e.g. by road, rail, air, waterways, sea, etc. or a combination of those, e.g. roll-on-roll-off. If a TIR carnet is in use, it shall cover the operation carried out only for the leg by road and in a country with which a TIR transit operation can be established.
HGV
Stands for Heavy Goods Vehicle and in the sense of the TIR Convention shall mean not only any power-driven road vehicle but also any trailer or semi-trailer designed to be coupled thereto.

Revision of the TIR Convention
The TIR Convention, has been revised 19 times since 1975. The latest amendments came into force on 17 February 1999.
T documents
Those are Customs transit documents (T1; T2; T2L) used for the purposes of internal or external transit carried out under the Community/Common Transit system (CT) covering transit movements between EU member states, EFTA countries and the Visegrad 4 (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia).

TIR carnet
Is a Customs transit document permitting facilitation of international trade and international road transport, under cover of which transport of goods from (a) Customs office(s) of departure to (a) Customs office(s) of destination is carried out under the procedure called "TIR procedure" laid down in the TIR Convention.
TIR Convention
The UNECE Customs Convention on the International Transport of Goods under Cover of TIR Carnets (TIR Convention, 1975).
Transit documents
Shall mean any Customs transit document (international or national) under cover of which a transport of goods is carried out from (a) Customs office(s) of departure to (a) Customs office(s) of destination. Such documents serve as bonds vis-a-vis the Customs authorities of the countries of departure, in transit and of destination for the goods carried. Such international transit documents may be TIR carnets, T-documents (Common Transit). National transit documents may be used on the territory of countries, which are not contracting parties to any international transit agreements or regional agreements are in use or in which such international agreements are under suspension or not applicable. There may be cases where two or more transit documents are in use for one transit operation.
Triptyque
Is a similar Customs document to the CPD but serves mainly private vehicles subject to temporary importation procedures for the purposes of tourism.
