Objectives:
- Reduce the number of accidents involving commercial vehicles to:
- Decrease the physical and mental suffering caused to accident victims and their families;
- Improve the image of road transport in order to obtain the support of political decision-makers and avoid political measures costly to the industry;
- Improve the productivity of road transport.
Permanent and long term Working Programme:
- Based on reliable data, promote effective measures that help reducing truck accidents.
- Promote the training and education of all actors in the road transport industry and all road users by means of training and educational programmes, meeting up to internationally recognised standards, such as those of the IRU Academy.
- Organise or participate in campaigns in favour of road safety launched at the international, national and industry levels.
- Cooperate in the work of the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a follow-up to the UN resolution on Road Safety.
- Participate in the work of the Global Road Safety Partnership and promote implementation of its programmes by IRU Member Associations with the assistance of national governments.
- Participate in the work of the UNECE Working Party on Road Traffic Safety.
Working Programme for 2008
- European Truck Accident Causation Study:
- Based on the ETAC study results in its recommendations, identify and propose actions that could be taken to reduce effectively truck accidents and their seriousness.
- Communicate, with IRU Members, the findings of the ETAC study to appropriate governmental and non governmental bodies.
- Seek to enlarge the geographical coverage of the ETAC study with the support of international organisations / donors.
- Road safety statistics
- Collect and disseminate road accident statistics supplied by the members of the IRU Road Safety Commission.
- IRU Road Safety Charter
- Monitor and promote implementation by the IRU Members of the IRU Road Safety Charter, its objectives and tools.
- Monitor and promote implementation by transport operators of the Road Safety Charter for Transport Operators.
- International Seminar on Communicating Road Safety during the IAA (International Motor Show – Commercial Vehicles) in Hannover.
