- Define and attain the IRU transport policy objectives, with a view to promoting and developing goods transport by road and safeguarding the industry’s interests.
- Defend the interests of the EU goods road transport industry vis-à-vis the competent
authorities.
- Promote the image of goods transport by road, and especially its benefits to all European
citizens, through coordinated and targeted actions and via participation in related events and initiatives.
Working programme
- Monitor and influence EU road transport policy as well as developments in the legislative and
political framework at the different European Institutions in order to defend the industry’s interest with respect to market related, social, technical, fiscal, economic and environmental issues.
- Promote the economic, social and environmental objectives defined in the IRU strategy on
sustainable development.
- Promote the harmonisation and standardisation of vehicles, transport units and loading
equipment in order to ensure the successful development of co-modality.
- Play a constructive role in the EU Commission’s work towards the development of a strategic framework to extend transport infrastructure networks to the EU’s neighbouring countries which would facilitate goods transport by road to and from these countries.
- Monitor developments in the field of traffic bans, obtain guarantees for the free movement of
goods in the European Union and use opportunities to influence and take appropriate actions towards a possible new proposal on the harmonisation of traffic bans at European level.
- Continue to work towards harmonisation of tax systems and a prevention of the increase of the overall tax burden for road freight transport through initiatives such as the creation of a level2 playing field between the different modes, and by promoting that any revenues coming from taxes levied on road freight transport should be used for investment in road transport.
- Continue to enhance and promote monitoring of the acquis implementation and proper market functioning, including analysing post enlargement traffic developments in this area and others and use opportunities to try to obtain the improved EU traffic monitoring indicators.
- Continue to monitor EU initiatives to increase security in the supply chain and influence where
necessary.
