IRU Commission on Technical Affairs (CIT)

Objectives:
  • Study and make recommendations to the competent organs of the IRU on technical subjects concerning the transport of passengers and goods by road. These subjects cover vehicle improvement (optimising weight and dimensions, reducing noise and gas emissions, improving energy savings and road safety, etc), administrative documents related to vehicles, loading units and techniques, and their integration into the transport chain, particularly in combined or dangerous goods transport.

Permanent and long term working programme:

  • Inform IRU bodies and Members on developments and operating conditions for road transport.
  • Elaborate and define – as drafts for competent bodies – IRU’s policies on technical issues relating to road transport.
  • Elaborate and analyse technical proposals to improve operations, productivity, geographical coverage, road safety, the conservation of natural resources, and reduce their impact on the roads, noise, emissions and energy consumption.
  • Elaborate and analyse proposals concerning weights and dimensions of road vehicles and loading units used in transport from EU institutions.
  • Monitor and follow-up other proposals concerning road transport from the UNECE (WP 29), the International Transport Forum (ex-ECMT) and EU institutions.
  • Analyse and influence with IRU Members the warranty, customer claims, service quality and dealer networks for new technologies.
  • Elaborate and promote aspects enhancing road safety concerning drivers, vehicles and infrastructure.
  • Coordinate and promote the activities of the IRU Academy.

Working programme for 2008:

  • Continue to provide information on the consequences of new environmental protection norms and measures on vehicles and transport operators.
  • Provide information on the future emission standards (Euro V, Euro VI, US 2007-2010) including the required infrastructures.
  • Monitor and influence weights and dimensions of utility vehicles and advise the Passenger Transport Council on technical aspects regarding the weights and dimensions of touring coaches.
  • Monitor and influence roadworthiness tests of heavy commercial vehicles and taxis.
  • Monitor and influence international activities within the European Union and the UNECE regarding active and passive safety for trucks, buses and coaches.
  • Monitor and influence in cooperation with heavy duty commercial vehicle manufacturers and tyre manufactures the technical development in order to optimise mobility, safety, security, environment protection and energy in road transport.
