At the World Congress of the International Road Transport Union (IRU) held in Bucharest, on 29 May, 2002, the IRU Presidential Executive approved the application from the China Road Transport Association (CRTA) to become a Member of the IRU. Following China's recent accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO), the CRTA's entry into the IRU illustrates the desire of the world's most populous country to participate more actively in logistic activities linked to international trade.

The CRTA is the only nationwide road transport organisation in China well presented in all provinces of the country. CRTA represents 1'000 of China's largest road transport enterprises, which put some 1 million commercial vehicles on the road as well as millions of smaller transport companies around 4,2 million in number. The road transport sector in China employs nearly 14 million people nationwide and its vehicle fleet boast 4,4 million commercial freight and 1,3 million passenger road vehicles. CRTA provides a bridge between road transport enterprises and the Government and its mission is to promote road transport in China and to open it up to the outside world.

Through CRTA's IRU membership, the Silk Road, in particular its growing use for the international road transport operations, turns into reality.
