General Congress Information
LANGUAGES
Simultaneous interpretation will be provided at the Congress sessions in Turkish, English, French, German and Russian. Other languages might be considered in case of sufficient participation.
EXHIBITION
A road transport logistics exhibition of 7000 m2 will be held in parallel with the Congress at Lüfti Kirdar Exhibition Centre, next door to the Congress Hall.
The Exhibition will be geared towards increasing road transport operators’profitability, giving a valuable insight into the latest products and most up-to-date services available to the road transport industry, ranging from commercial vehicles to information technology equipment and software.

AIRFARES
Reduced rates with Turkish Airlines

Please note that the special discount rates will only be available as of January 2008.
On Turkish Airlines (THY) flights, delegates may fly with a 10% discount with flights booked for dates between the 10 days preceding and 10 days following the IRU Congress, except for code-share, incentive travel and promotional flights. Special discount tickets may be purchased at THY sales offices by indicating the special code number of BB438 and presenting a copy of your confirmation of registration for the 31st IRU World Congress. You may find the THY sales office closest to you with the help of the following link: http://www.thy.com.
Cancellation: delegates may cancel their tickets according to the cancellation policy of their ticket class. A copy of the cancellation policy may be obtained from THY sales offices by indicating the special code number of BB438.
AIRPORT
From Atatürk Istanbul International Airport it takes about 30 to 70 minutes by taxi, depending on traffic conditions, to reach the City Centre and Congress Hotels. Price: approximately € 40.
COACH TRANSFER
Coach transfer services will be provided to and from the Congress events. Daily information will be posted in each hotel lobby.
The schedule of the airport transfers will be published on this website nearer to Congress time. These will be organised only on the dates indicated.
To facilitate airport transfer scheduling, please ensure that you include your flight details on the Registration Forms.
DUTY FREE ALLOWANCE
The current duty free allowance for Turkey for tobacco is 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars. For wine and spirits, the allowance is 5 (one-litre) or 7 (70 cl) bottles. You can purchase duty free goods at Istanbul International Airport, after going through passport control.
CONGRESS BADGES
For “business contacts” and security reasons, identity badges will also serve as admission passes. Only badge-holders will be admitted to the Congress area and social events.
BUSINESS HOURS IN ISTANBUL
- Banks are open during the week from 9:00 to12:30 and from 13:30 to 17:30 and are closed on Saturdays & Sundays.
- Shopping centres are open every day from 10:00 to 22:00 (ten minutes by taxi from the Congress Centre).
- Grand Bazaar: 8:00–19:30 (twenty minutes by taxi from the Congress Centre).
CURRENCY & CREDIT CARDS
The Turkish new Lira is worth 1 TRL = 0.54 EUR (16 April 2007) subject to fluctuation.
Visa, MasterCard and American Express are generally accepted in hotels and larger stores.
HEALTH Medical certificates are not necessary to enter Istanbul unless you come from areas infected with cholera or yellow fever. Please consult your doctor if you have any specific requirements. In Istanbul, hospitals are well equipped. As medical treatment is costly, participants are recommended to purchase, prior to their departure, a personal travel and medical insurance for the whole trip.
DRESS
During the day, light business attire is suggested, with a jacket for men. At the evening events, dark suits may be worn by gentlemen and cocktail dresses by ladies. Evening dress (black tie or dark suit / long dress) would be appropriate for the Gala Dinner, casual dress and a light sweater on optional tours.
TAXI
Taxis in Istanbul are metered and are a popular and inexpensive way to get around the city.
TIME
The local time in Istanbul is GMT + 2 hour.
WEATHER
Istanbul has a Mediterranean climate.

Tap water is considered safe to use, however, bottled water is recommended for drinking.
