  2. Properly spec truck & trailer for needs (focus on compatible industries)
  3. Well trained driver force (Ongoing safety training & driving habits)
  4. Technology:
    1. On board communication
    2. Trailer tracking
    3. On line computer tracking
    4. Optimization: Fuel, Routing, Load Planning
    5. EOI: Billing, Info Transfer

  1. Claims Handling (Prevention, Proper equipment for Customs)

Response to Topic #1 Questions:

  1. ATA functions are not operations based
  2. Based on managing federal laws & regulations affecting trucking industry such as driver hours of service, HazMat requirements, Tax Policy, Safety Policy.
  3. ATA also helps the state associations with support
  4. American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI)  – research arm
  5. Know your Customer, Know his Freight. (Critical on time reports & profitability reports, Proper Equipment for customer: load securement, trailer specs).

Topic #2: Cost Management Best Practices:

  1. Fuel is the main issue today:

  1. Idling
  2. wide base tires
  3. proper set engines
  4. driver behavior & training
  5. size & weight

  1. Safety Management: Technology

    1. Driver training simulators
    2. Anti rollover
    3. Collision avoidance
    4. Monitor Driver Behavior (heavy breaking, aggressive driving)

  1. The biggest difference is fleet size
    1. My company is a mid-sized company (700 trucks, 1500 trailers). Very large components in other countries.
  2. Strong regulations:
    1. Speed, Hours of Service, Size & Weights, Equipment Inspections, Newer Equipment
  3. Monitor
    1. Fuel cost by truck, Maintenance by truck, driver behavior (safety, fuel consumption, utilization)

Topic #3: Reason for Development of long-distance trucking activities:

  1. Large geographically
  2. Have had infrastructure that was best in the world (good roads, cost effective, ability to handle larger equipment, good rail system)
  3. Manufacturing & resource development everywhere
  4. Agriculture everywhere
  5. Infrastructure allows easy movement of agricultural products, natural resources & manufacturing & retail distribution
  6. Manufacturing developed by area

Response to Topic #3 Question:

  1. Absolutely not: rising cost of infrastructure, congestion and congestion costs, equipment costs, fuel costs, driver labor costs.
