The IRU has developed guidelines to ensure the sustainable development of road transport, as well as its security.
These publications provide a set of best practices and detailed recommendations aimed at road transport managers and drivers for implementation at company level.

Best Industry PracticesThis IRU report presents best practices implemented by the road transport industry to achieve sustainable development. These include measures that reduce environmental impact while satisfying market demand and maintaining the economic survival of the company. The examples included in the report present a brief description of the company and its services, a description of the various measures the company has taken to drive towards sustainable development, information on the framework conditions and the process of implementation, and benefits for the company and the environment. IRU Guide to Sustainable DevelopmentThis Guide is the latest step in the International Road Transport Union's initiative for sustainable development. It sets out practical measures that individual transport operators can use to incorporate sustainable development principles into their normal operations. The purpose is to learn from existing national initiatives and to encourage further national programmes. The existing programmes are synthesised into six modules from which road transport associations and operators can choose the tools that are best suited to their individual circumstances. The activities covered include improvement of road safety, implementation of environmental management systems and envionmental controlling, promotion of best industry practices and driver training programmes.
